Circles of the Coastal Bend is a community-driven program that works to increase upward mobility for individuals and families in poverty in
Nueces County. We partner volunteers and community leaders with individuals and families wanting to make the
journey out of poverty. It's about intentional relationships across income lines.
Circles is an effective poverty reduction initiative that revolves around building intentional relationships across income lines. Almost 80 communities in the United States and Canada use Circles because the results are so encouraging. After 18 months, participants achieve an average 71% increase in their income. Circles participants are called Circle Leaders because they lead themselves out of poverty. Each Circle Leader is matched with two Allies, middle- and upper-income volunteers who help Circle Leaders use their unique gifts and skills to reach their personal and financial goals. Social capital is often the missing link between short-term relief and long-term stability. Many who live in poverty are hardworking and motivated, so when two Allies join them, advice is offered, social networks are shared, and the obstacles that keep people in poverty start to disappear.
In Circles, our volunteers are called Allies. They are the primary foundation of support for Circle Leaders. As an Ally, your job is to encourage, make suggestions, and support the Circles Leaders. You and other Allies will help them use their gifts and skills to reach their goals. Along the way, Circle Leaders will help you better understand poverty in your community. Training provided.
Do you feel stuck? Do you want to improve yourself and achieve your goals? Circles of the Coastal Bend can help you. Circle participants are called Circle Leaders and receive training on finances, employment, health, goal setting, and communication skills. As a Circle Leader, you will be matched with Circle Allies who are there to support you on your journey.
